Understanding SEO: Step 4 - Accessibility

From Understanding Search Engine Optimization Process Series

You may not fully understand the technology behind Search Engine Optimization process – after all, that is what experts are for – however understanding the concept is easier then you think.

If you had ever bought or sold a house, or even simply watched any of the house-hunting shows on TV, consider yourself armed with basic knowledge.

Step #4: Accessibility.

First of all, let me make a note that term Web Accessibility is generally used in a different context: term Web Accessibility means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, so they can benefit from and contribute to the Web. However, in this article we talk about accessibility more in a curb-appeal sense of this word. (We will be covering Web Accessibility on another occasion.)

So, in a nutshell: your website should be easily found on the internet. Let’s get back to our website-to-house comparison.

Remember: what good your potential buyers are to you, if they could not find your place on the open house day?

The house has to be easy to find, even if it is in a very remote area. When you print an ad about your house being on the market, you include the address and directions to your place. You make sure that the street address numbers are easily seen from the street, and the front door is clearly visible and well-lit. Even when you print the address, you also have “Open House” or “Home for Sale” sign standing tall on the front lawn, to make it obvious for buyers that they came to the right place.

Now, let’s think of the website. Your domain name is your street address. Your landscape and front door is your homepage. Your “For Sale” sign is the title and the tagline of your website. Your website will hardly be found if it is not listed in the variety of search engine resources, directories and other websites, just like your house will not likely be found if the address is only printed in a phone book and not listed in real estate magazines and local newspapers. Your should have your own website - www.yourdomainname.com - rather then a page on one of those public servers where your users have to type a hundred of characters into a browser's address bar to get to your page.

Make it easy for your potential visitors to find you.
