Is your business prepared for a disaster? In Waldwick, New Jersey, on September 13th, 2015, a massive fire started after what sounded like a pair of blasts, at about 10:30 AM, prompting a huge response. In addition to Waldwick firefighters, departments from nearby towns of Ho-Ho-Kus, Wyckoff, Mahwah, Paramus,  Saddle River, Oakland, Franklin Lakes, Midland Park, and Lodi were among first responders.

According to the Kate Vossen, a spokeswoman for PSE&G, the fire was started by an equipment failure at the substation. This incident also caused the power failure  for approximately 2,000 PSE&G customers, in residential and business areas in Hillsdale, Westwood and Woodcliff Lake.

Fire in Waldwick, NJ could be seen for miles.

Fire in Waldwick, NJ could be seen for miles.

The area at Waldwick substation had to be made safe before firefighters could work; considering the nature of electrical fire, only three hours after the initial blasts, the firefighters were able to begin suppressing the fire using foam.

A few hours later, black smoke could still bee seen for miles throughout the area; according to PSE&G, the power has been restored for most by approximately 2PM on the same day.

In times like this it is important to remember to protect people, and their assets – and it includes businesses.

It is important to have a plan not only for recovery (only after the fact), but also for continuity (during and after the disaster).  For example, this fire may not have damaged any businesses, but if the area needed to be evacuated, not every business owner can continue running their business off premises.
