When you decide to sell the house, you would not just sit there waiting for someone to figure out that your house is on the market – you hire the real estate agent, place ads in newspapers, and spread the word any way you think is reasonable, right?
Then why wouldn’t you do the same for your website? You can just have a domain name with basic site just sitting there and expect visitors to find you with no effort on your part.
Let them know your business is online!
There is a variety of the online directories and search engine submission tools that you need to consider. Among those are the Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.org) – notoriously difficult to get into; the Web World (www.webworldindex.com), and the Yahoo Directory (dir.yahoo.com). Once your domain is listed there, it will be a matter of time for your website to be indexed and picked up by various search engines.
Getting listed is tough, and you must follow certain guidelines in order to achieve success.
There are some requirements you must meet – without them chance of getting listed - i your site has not been yet – are slim to none.
First, obviously – dont’ forget to submit your URL to the directories. Check!
Second, you must have a REAL site. Not “under construction” or “Hello World – just another WordPress Site” type of a sticky. Gather some content that would last you for at least 5 pages, and please make sure your content is relevant to your business.
Third, make sure your website lists your contact information, including company’s physical address. Editors at directories frown upon the “Zorro Sites”. Having no address listed is usually a givaway for spammer sites. Do you want to be perceived as one? Then come out of hiding!
Last, but not least… Be patient. While following guidelines is recommended, keep in mind that there is no exact formula as to how and why some sitest have a faster turnaround. I’ve seen some listed in 2 weeks, and I know some that have been chugging at it for over a year.
